Context

In John 14, Jesus comforts His disciples, preparing them for His departure and promising the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
 ––John 14:12 14:12 KJV

How to read it

Jesus is saying that if we believe in Him, we can do even cooler and bigger things than He did. That sounds wild, right? But it’s because He’s going to the Father and sending us help—like a spiritual upgrade. It’s like getting the ultimate power boost in a game, and with the Holy Spirit, we’re equipped to change the world. Believe it to see it.

Let’s pray

Heavenly Father,
thank You for giving me the chance to do great and even greater works. I praise You for entrusting us with such power and authority. Help me to believe in Your Word and to act in faith. Let the Holy Spirit guide me in all my actions to reflect Your love and power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Parallel Verses

Mark 16:17-18: “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” —— John 5:20: “For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.” —— Acts 1:8: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
